A respectable distance from an unpleasant event is a desirable thing for the modern patron. Viewed without the twin filters of distance and ironic perception, the possibility of charity could become an unpleasant reality. There are positions to be taken, and illusions to maintain, that takes time and effort! Veneer is all the counts; it lets people know you are important. Cruelty is a privilege, and that loser probably deserved it anyway.
